Vikings Shut Out Saint Martin's 1-0

Darby Doyle scores game-winning goal in the 29th minute

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team held a decisive 19-7 advantage in shots, but it only took one goal from senior Darby Doyle to deliver a 1-0 victory over Saint Martin's Tuesday night at Harrington Field.

The Vikings (1-0-1) picked up their first win in the abbreviated 2020-21 season while playing for the first time in over two weeks. Saint Martin's had already played eight games prior to tonight's match-up with the Vikings, and dropped to 1-8-0 on the season. WWU has now won 17 consecutive games vs. the Saints dating back to the 2011 season.

After a few early chances came up empty for WWU, Doyle, a senior midfielder from Spokane, capitalized in the 29th minute when she found the back of the net on a cutback pass from junior forward Estera Levinte.

Western had multiple chances to add on to its lead, but Saint Martin's sophomore goalkeeper Ali Campigotto was in fine form once again while playing at Harrington Field. Campigotto recorded nine saves, nearly equaling her 11-save performance vs. the Vikings in 2019.

The trademark WWU defense locked down the Saints to record a second consecutive shutout to open the spring season. The Vikings have yet to allow a goal in 200 minutes of action in two games this season. Senior Natalie Dierickx (3 saves in 60 minutes) and sophomore Abigail Trengove (1 save in 30 minutes) combined for the shutout in goal.

UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
