Vikings Earn Road Win at Saint Martin's

Men's Soccer improves to 2-1-0 on the spring with second consecutive win over Saints

LACEY, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team recorded its second consecutive victory with a 2-1 row win over Saint Martin's University Saturday afternoon at SMU Soccer Field.

WWU scored a goal in each half, and held off a late rally by the Saints to improve to 2-1-0 during the abbreviated spring season. Saint Martin's concluded its spring season with a 2-7-1 record.

Western junior defender Teagan Eldridge put the Vikings on the board early in the game with a goal in the 17th minute. Senior defender Camron Miller gained possession near midfield and lofted a perfect pass down the left sideline to a streaking Eldridge. After a soft first touch, Eldridge had a clinical finish from just inside the 18-yard box for his first goal of the spring.

WWU went up 2-0 when Alessandro Tomasi headed home an insurance goal off a cross from junior defender Iakov Shmelev early in the 74th minute. Shmelev, who scored WWU's golden goal in a 1-0 win over Saint Martin's earlier this spring, won a tackle near the WWU sideline, sprung back up to his feet and delivered a perfect cross where the 6-3 Tomasi whipped it into the back of the net with a header.

Saint Martin's pulled to within one goal with an 83rd minute score by Cole Mattson.

The Vikings held a 15-11 advantage in shots and a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had three saves, with WWU starting goalkeeper Brandon Lock making one stop in 66 minutes.

UP NEXT FOR THE VIKINGS
The Vikings (2-1-0) return to action next Saturday facing Seattle Pacific on the road on May 8 with kickoff at Interbay Stadium scheduled for 5:30 pm.
