Vikings Close Spring With 3-1 Victory

WWU defeats CWU to finish spring 4-1-2

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team closed out its spring season with a 3-1 victory over Central Washington University Saturday at Harrington Field.

The Vikings got a first-half goal from sophomore forward Estera Levinte in the 24th minute, and then added two early second-half goals to improve to 4-1-2 during the abbreviated seven-game spring schedule. CWU finished 2-3-0, which included a pair of losses to the Vikings.

The Vikings got on the board first early in the 24th minute when Levinte weaved through defenders from near midfield, and fired a low left-footed shot from the top of the box for her third goal of the spring.

Western scored a pair of early second-half goals – one minute, nine-seconds apart – to extend the lead to 3-0.

Darby Doyle took a pass from Ashley Nguyen outside of the left side of the box, created space and fired a left-footed shot that dipped into the right side of the goal over the CWU goalkeeper.

Just over a minute later the Vikings struck again, this time with senior goalkeeper Natalie Dierickx initiating the scoring opportunity delivering a long pass down the right side of the field to junior forward Dayana Diaz. After Diaz beat her defender, she fired a low cross to find Zola Carbone streaking through the box where she one-timed a low shot with her left foot to the far past.

CWU avoided the shutout with a goal by Jayme Woodfill in the 88th minute, with assists by Grace Jackson and Megan Meindersee.

The Vikings controlled the tempo of the game holding a 22-12 advantage in shots (7-5 in shots on goal) and 10-2 edge in corner kicks.

WWU starting goalkeeper senior Natalie Dierickx made one save and also recorded an assist in 60 scoreless minutes in goal.
