BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's basketball team set a program single-game record making 21 three-pointers in a lopsided 108-54 victory over Maine Fort Kent Tuesday evening in non-conference action on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
The Vikings improved to 4-1 on the season while doubling up the Bengals in the 54-point victory. WWU's balanced scoring attack featured six players scoring in double-digits and all 12 players that suited up scoring points.
WWU was 21-for-41 from three-point range, bettering the previous program record of 18 treys made on February 5, 2005 in a 110-84 home win over Saint Martin's. Nine different players made at least one three-pointers and the Vikings also set a program single-game record with the 41 three-point attempts.
Senior guard Lucas Holden led the Vikings in scoring with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Senior guard Daniel Hornbuckle connected on a team-high five three-pointers (5-for-8) while scoring 15 points and dishing out a team-high seven assists. Junior guard D'Angelo Minnis added 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting with five assists and four rebounds.
Sophomore forward Nic Welp had a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double and sophomore guard Kai Johnson filled up the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and one steal. Junior guard/forward Darius Gary scored 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting with four three-pointers.
Overall WWU shot 56.9% from the field (41-for-72) and were 21-for-41 (51.2%) from three-point range. The Vikings held a 52-37 advantage in rebounding. WWU also had an impressive 30-to-9 assist-to-turnover ratio, tying for the fifth-most assists in a game during the NCAA era (since 1998-99).
Through five games the Vikings are averaging 94.0 points per game and shooting at a .520 clip (168-for-323).
Maine Fort Kent was led by 17 points from Everett High School product Peter Wilson on 7-for-15 shooting.
The Vikings (4-1) are back on the road this weekend taking on Point Loma on Saturday at 2 pm in Golden Gymnasium in San Diego. WWU's next game will be Tuesday, November 29 hosting Capilano on Native American Heritage Night in Carver Gym. One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, WWU has recorded a 20-win season in eight of the last 11 seasons. WWU is a six-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion and has appeared in the NCAA II Elite 8 three times. The Vikings won the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championship and advanced the following season to the NCAA II Final Four. Western has 20-win seasons in three of the last four years (and seven of nine) and won the 2020 GNAC Championships Tournament. WWU is the 12th winningest Division II program with its 1,528 all-time victories. Head coach Tony Dominguez is in his 10th season and 11th year as the Vikings head coach (28th overall at WWU) and is listed in the top 20 amongst active NCAA Division II head coaches with a .671 winning percentage (186-91).
