BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team received a total team effort in an 84-40 victory over Dominican University Friday afternoon to close out the first day of the Lynda Goodrich Classic on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
The Dykstra sisters – Riley and older sister Avery – led four Vikings scoring in double digits as all 11 players that suited up for Western scored at least two points. Riley was 7-for-12 shooting with four three-pointers and Avery was 5-for-11 from the field.
The No. 13 nationally-ranked Vikings improved to 2-1 on the season with the 44-point victory, using an 18-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to pull away from the Penguins (2-3). After leading by just four points 19-15 at the end of the first quarter, WWU out-scored Dominican 23-5 in the second quarter to pull away for a 42-20 halftime lead.
"I thought we started a little slow, but turned to our defense in the second quarter to get going," said WWU head coach Carmen Dolfo. "It was a good team win where we got contributions from everyone on the roster. We are going to carry the momentum from today into tomorrow's game as Bemidji State is a very good team."
In addition to the strong performance by both Dykstra's, junior forward Brooke Walling neared a triple-double with seven points (3-for-4 FG), 11 rebounds and eight assists. Senior Monique Fierke scored a career-high 10 points connecting on a trio of three-pointers in the second half and sophomore Maddy Grandbois contributed 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Sophomore Truitt Reilly came close to a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds, and also recorded two blocked shots.
Dominican was led by eight points by senior guard Brittney Cedeno and six points from Jenna Duley. WWU's defense limited the Penguins to 27.0-percent shooting (17-for-63) and just 1-for-14 from three-point range.
The Vikings held a decisive 52-35 advantage in rebounding (13-7 offensive) and scored 17 points off 18 turnovers.
Bemidji State opened the Lynda Goodrich Classic Friday with a 67-46 victory over Saint Martin's. Dominican and Saint Martin's open the final day of the two-day tournament on Saturday at 2 pm, followed by the Vikings and Bemidji State at 4:30 pm. Fans can receive free admission to the games with the donation of an unwrapped toy for Toys-for-Tots.
