Walling Double-Double Lifts Vikings to 68-50 Victory Over Bemidji State

WWU wins third consecutive game with 68-50 win over Bemidji State to cap 2-0 Lynda Goodrich Classic

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Led by a 21-point, 17-rebound double-double from junior forward Brooke Walling, the No. 13 nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's basketball team recorded an 18-point victory over Bemidji State to close out the Lynda Goodrich Classic.

 

WWU improved to 3-1 on the season with its third consecutive victory, defeating Bemidji State 68-50 on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

Walling earned Tournament MVP honors for the second consecutive week with her third double-double of the season. The junior forward was 9-for-18 from the field in her 21-point performance, grabbing a career-high-tying 17 boards while also blocking five shots. In two tournament games Walling averaged 14.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 3.0 blocks and 2.0 steals per game. 

 

Senior guard Avery Dykstra also earned a spot on the all-tournament team with 13 points against the Beavers on 5-for-9 shooting, adding two blocks and a steal. Senior forward Katrina Gimmaka poured in a season-high 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting and Maddy Grandbois solidified a spot on the all-tournament team with nine points and six rebounds in 29 minutes.

 

The Vikings held a 10-point 36-26 lead at the half following a buzzer-beater putback by Dykstra, but the Beavers opened the third quarter on an 11-6 run to pull to within five points at 42-37. WWU responded with an 11-6 spurt kept its lead in tact the remainder of the way for the 18-point victory.

 

Sam Pogatchnik led the Beavers with 14 points on 6-for-14 shooting (8 rebounds) and Trinity Yoder earned a spot on the all-tournament team following her 12-point performance.

 

The Vikings (3-1) are back in action Tuesday with a road game at Point Loma (7 pm) and open GNAC play next Saturday (Dec. 3) at Simon Fraser.

NEXT UP FOR THE VIKINGS

WWU (3-1) takes to the road for the first time this season taking on Point Loma in San Diego on Tuesday with tip-off set for 7 pm in Golden Gymnasium. The Vikings continue the season schedule on the road opening GNAC play Saturday (Dec. 3) at Simon Fraser at 5:15 pm.
