Bench Scoring Sparks Vikings to 13-Point Win

WWU improves to 7-1 with 76-63 win over Fairmont State

HONOLULU – The nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's basketball team continues its winning ways in a 76-63 victory over Fairmont State University Sunday during the second day of the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic.

 

The No. 8 (D2SIDA – Media) and No. 10 (WBCA – Coaches) Vikings improved to 7-1 overall winning their seventh consecutive game, defeating the Fighting Falcons by a 13-point margin. WWU received 49 points from its bench, led by career-high scoring performances from sophomore guard Maddy Grandbois (18 points) and freshman guard Mason Oberg (16 points).

 

WWU shot a season-best 58.0-percent in the game, connecting on 29-of-50 shots and was 10-for-28 from three-point range. The Vikings also held a decisive 40-25 advantage in rebounds. 

 

Grandbois was 6-for-7 from the field and connected on five three-pointers in her career-high scoring game. Oberg tallied double-digits in scoring for the fourth time this season, adding to her 13-point performance in Friday's tournament opener vs. Hawai'i Pacific. 

 

Senior forwards Katrina Gimmaka and Carley Zaragoza added to the balanced scoring attack with eight points each and junior forward Brooke Walling contributed six points and a team-high seven rebounds.

 

Fairmont State (8-4) was led by a game-high 21 points by Jertaya Hall and 14 points and seven rebounds by Katy Darnell. The Fighting Falcons season resume includes a victory over No. 19 nationally-ranked Charleston (WV) and 

 

WWU led by as many as 23 points midway through the fourth quarter before settling for the 13-point victory. Fairmont State ended the game on a 12-2 run.

 

NEXT UP FOR THE VIKINGS

WWU (7-1, 1-0 GNAC) close out play in the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic Monday taking on Chaminade at 8:15 pm PT/6:15 pm HT. The game will feature a live webcast and statistical updated with direct links available at wwuvikings.com/WBB. The Vikings return home to close out the calendar year hosting Alaska Anchorage (12/29, 7 pm) and Alaska Fairbanks (12/31, 2 pm) in GNAC play on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

CELEBRATE NEW YEAR'S WITH THE VIKINGS

WWU returns to Carver Gym for a pair of key GNAC home games December 29 (7 pm) and 31 (2 pm) hosting the Alaska schools. Each game will feature a canned food drive offering free admission by donating a non-perishable food item. Free admission will also be offered for WWU faculty and staff and all youth that wear their favorite sports jersey will gain free admission. And each game will feature a free big-ticket giveaway with a raffle for an iPad and Air Pods.

ABOUT WWU BASKETBALL

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in nine of the last 13 full seasons, and 36 times in the 52-year history of the program. WWU has 22 seasons of 20 or more wins under head coach Carmen Dolfo, who is the winningest coach of any sport at WWU and ranks among Division II active and all-time coaching leaders in wins with 650, winning percentage and 20-win seasons. The Vikings have reached the NCAA II Tournament in 18 of 23 possible seasons at the Division II level with three trips to the Elite Eight (including 2022) and played in the 2022 national championship game. The program has 1,082 all-time wins in the 52-year history of the program, and according to available records, is one of less than 20 women's college basketball team across all divisions and levels to reach the 1,000-victory milestone.
