BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the second consecutive game, the No. 8 nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's basketball team crossed the 100-point milestone in a 101-57 victory over Alaska Fairbanks Saturday afternoon on WECU Court in Carver Gym.
A program that is built with a defensive mindset has turned offensive scoring 205 points in the last two games following a 104-51 victory over No. 25 Alaska Anchorage on Thursday. The Vikings scored 100 points in a game for the 28th time in program history, but just the third time in consecutive games in the decorated 52-seasons of program history. WWU became the first team in the 22-year history of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference to record consecutive 100-point games in conference play.
WWU extended its winning streak to nine consecutive games to improve to 9-1 on the season and gained early sole possession of the GNAC lead at 3-0 in conference play. Alaska Fairbanks dropped to 3-8 overall and 0-4 in GNAC play.
The Vikings took control from the beginning with a 35-point first quarter, tying for the second-most points in a quarter in program history since moving to the four-quarter format in 2015-16.
WWU used another balanced scoring attack to record the 44-point victory with 10 of 11 players scoring points. The Vikings combined to shoot 56.1-percent from the field (37-for-66) and were 10-for-24 from beyond the arc. Western owned the boards with a 51-18 advantage on the glass and dished out 28 assists.
Redshirt freshman point guard Mason Oberg led the Vikings with a career-high 18 points on 6-for-9 shooting, including 5-for-8 from three-point range. Sophomore forward Truitt Reilly recorded a second consecutive double-double with a career-high 16 points and 13 rebounds, also adding five steals. In limited minutes, junior forward Brooke Walling filled up the stat sheet once again with 16 points on 4-for-6 shooting, went 7-for-9 from the free throw line, grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists in 17 minutes.
Senior Katrina Gimmaka also scored in double-digits with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting, falling just short of the WWU record making 11 consecutive field goals between Thursday (8-for-8) and Saturday (started 3-for-3). Junior guard Stephanie Peterson scored a career-high nine points, had six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Senior guard Mollie Olson led the Vikings with seven assists.
UAF was led by 17 points from Emma McKenney (4-for-8 FG, 6-for-8 FT) and 11 points by Sam Tolliver. The Nanooks were held to 18-for-56 shooting (.321) and were 14-for-20 from the free throw line.
BACK-TO-BACK 100-POINT GAMES
The Vikings became the first team in GNAC history to record back-to-back conference games scoring 100 or more points. WWU reached the 100-point plateau for the 28th time in program history, but just for the third time in back-to-back games. Joins the 1988-89 Vikings (100-49 vs. Alaska Pacific on Dec. 19, 1988 and 100-71 vs. UC Riverside on Dec. 27, 1988) and the 2003-03 squad (106-58 vs. Northwest on Dec. 20, 2002 and 108-57 vs. Cal State LA on Dec. 27, 2002).
In the two-game home sweep of the Alaska schools, WWU combined to out-score its opponent 205-108 and shoot 60.9% from the field (78-for-128). The Vikings also held a dominating 96-44 advantage in rebounding and combined to record 59 assists. Brooke Walling averaged 17.0 points on 12-for-16 shooting (.750) with 11 assists and three blocked shots.
WWU (9-1, 3-0 GNAC) returns to the road in GNAC play with games at Central Washington University in Moses Lake on Thursday (5:15 pm at Big Bend Community College) and at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho on Saturday (5:15 pm MT).
