TURLOCK, Calif. – Western Washington University sophomore starting pitcher
Sydney Brown recorded the 13th no-hitter in program history to lead the Vikings to a 6-0 victory over Academy of Art Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.
The shutout victory gave the Vikings a 3-2 record in the 2022 Tournament of Champions, improving Western's overall record to 20-15. WWU resumes Great Northwest Athletic Conference play next weekend tied atop the league standings with four games at border rival Simon Fraser University.
Brown struck out three batters, issued a pair of walks and hit one batter while recording her third shutout of the season. The Knights also reached base on a pair of fielding miscues by Viking infielders, but were not able to score a run. The sophomore from Vancouver (Mountain View High School) needed just 90 pitches to record the 28th individual no-hitter in GNAC history, of the seven-inning variety. Over her last 11 appearances (10 starts) since March 1, Brown is 7-1 with a 1.96 ERA (17 ER, 60.2 IP).
With Brown dazzling in the circle, the top of WWU's lineup was mashing. The Vikings 1-2-3-4-5 hitters (Dow-Lo, Brooks-Shimabukuro-Tarbox) combined to go 12-for-18 in the game with all five players recording multi-hit games. Senior second baseman
Chantelle Shimabukuro finished 3-for-3 with three RBI to extend her hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. Since February 22, Shimabukuro is batting .556 (35-for-63) and is now hitting a team-best .424 on the season.
Tatum Dow went 2-for-4 with her 12th double of the season and how has at least one hit in 33 of 35 games.
Macy Tarbox went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI.
The Vikings got off to a quick start on offense plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Shimabukuro continued her torrid stretch at the plate with a triple to center field and an additional run came in to score on a fielding error by the Academy of Art right fielder.
With Brown in cruise control in the circle, WWU added two more runs in the 3rd inning on a Shimabukuro sacrifice fly and triple by Tarbox. The rally was set up by a double from Dow and single by
Dakota Brooks.
Western added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th inning on run-scoring singles by Shimabukuro and Tarbox.
Academy of Art starting pitcher Haley Arnold-Jolley was saddled with the loss allowing 13 hits and six runs (5 ER) while going the full 6.0 innings.
