BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior second baseman
Chantelle Shimabukuro has been selected to the NFCA First Team All-West Region Team.
Shimabukuro (Aiea, HI/Edmonds College) led the Vikings in 2022 batting .401 (63-for-157) with nine doubles, three triples, three home runs and 30 RBI. She became the 11th player in the 30-year history of the WWU Softball program to hit .400 or better in a season and also recorded the 8th-best on-base percentage at .469. In 51 games (50 starts), she tallied 63 hits to tie for 5th-most in single-season program history and also cracked the top 10 with 87 total bases.
After starting the year batting .138 (4-for-29) through her first 11 games, she turned her season around by batting .461 (59-for-128) over her final 40 games. Her season was highlighted by a 19-game hitting streak and 32-game on-base streak that both rank 2nd all-time in WWU history. In the field she recorded a .983 fielding percentage making only three errors in 173 total chances.
"I think our whole team would agree that no one is more deserving of this honor than Tilly," said WWU head coach
Sheryl Gilmore. "She is an amazing person and player on and off the field, and it has been so cool to watch her grow over the last five years - first at Edmonds and then here at Western. Nobody works harder at their craft than she does and she's done it all the right way. I couldn't be more proud of her - she's made all of us better."
Amongst leaders in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference she ranked 2nd in batting average (.401), 2nd in hits (63), 3rd in on-base percentage (.469), 10th in slugging percentage (.554) and tied for 11th in RBI (30). Additionally, she was the top hitter in the GNAC with two outs (.481/26-for-54) and was 5th batting .426 (26-for-61) with runners in scoring position.
Shimabukuro finished her three-year WWU career with a .355 batting average (121-for-341) to rank 4th in program history and 6th all-time with a .426 on-base percentage. In addition to earning First Team NFCA All-West Region honors, Shimabukuro was a unanimous First Team All-GNAC selection in 2022 and was a two-time GNAC All-Academic award winner.
Shimabukuro becomes the sixth player in program history to earn First Team NFCA All-West Region honors. WWU has had a player earn the award in each of the last three full seasons with Emily Benson earning Player of the Year honors in 2019 and
Anna Kasner and
Tatum Dow being selected to the first team in 2021.
