BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head basketball coach
Carmen Dolfo has announced that guard
Stephanie Peterson will join the program as a transfer from Cameron University.
Peterson is a 5-10 guard that played three years at Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma, appearing in 73 games (50 starts) over her three-year collegiate career. She transfers into the WWU program with two years of eligibility remaining.
"We are thrilled to be adding Steph to our program, a defensive-minded player that has shown she is a very dynamic and versatile player in a very good conference during the early part of her collegiate career," said WWU head coach
Carmen Dolfo. "She will fit right in with our group of returning players and will have two years of eligibility remaining. We can't wait to get her started and see her in a WWU uniform."
Her career at Cameron was highlighted by being selected as the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a Third Team all-conference award winner in 2021-22. Starting all 28 games last season, Peterson averaged 13.3 points, 3.6 assists, 2.8 steals and 5.7 rebounds per game. She scored in double-digits in 20 of 28 games, recording four double-doubles, and had five steals in five different games. Cameron finished with a 17-11 record advancing to the second round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.
Peterson was also an All-Academic award winner as a student-athlete at Cameron in addition to earning a pair of third-team all-conference awards. In 2020-21 Peterson appeared in 17 of 19 games during the shortened season, helping lead the Aggies to the NCAA South Central Regional.
"I could tell from the first time I spoke to the coaches that they really cared about their players on and off the court, which really drew me to the program initially," said Peterson. "As soon as I came in my visit WWU felt like home, all of the girls made me feel so welcome. The team not only feels like a family but they are also all determined to be successful which is something that I wanted to be a part of."
A native of Broomfield, Colorado, Peterson was a four-time letterwinner at Broomfield High School where she was an honorable mention All-State selection as a senior and a two-time first-team All-Region pick.
Peterson is the first announced addition to the WWU Women's Basketball program for the 2022-23 season after concluding a historic 2022 season advancing to play in the national championship game.
