Vikings Fall 2-1 in Preseason Friendly at TWU

Caylie Etherington converts penalty kick for WWU in 81st minute

LANGLEY, B.C. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team opened its preseason exhibition schedule Thursday with a 2-1 loss against Trinity Western University at Chase Office Field.

Taking the field after only three days of training, the Vikings held a 15-11 advantage in shots over the Spartans, but a late comeback attempt fell short in the closely-contested loss. TWU held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Trailing 2-0, WWU senior Caylie Etherington cut into the two-goal deficit converting a penalty kick in the 81st minute.

The Vikings held an 8-5 advantage in shots over the Spartans in the first 45 minutes, with each team placing five shots on goal. WWU created several chances, but trailed 1-0 at the halftime break. TWU went ahead with a goal in the 33rd minute by Sophie Crowther.

WWU looked to equalize late in the half with three shots in the final three minutes, including a header shot by senior Allison Lepp that was saved off a corner by Etherington.

TWU, a Canadian powerhouse that has played in nine of the last 10 U Sports Championships, went up 2-0 with a goal midway through the second half when Charis Wardrope scored in the 73rd minute.

WWU starting goalkeeper Claire Henninger made five saves in 65 minutes of action, with reserve Abigail Trengove stopping a pair of shots in 25 minutes.
