LANGLEY, B.C. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team opened its preseason exhibition schedule Thursday with a 2-1 loss against Trinity Western University at Chase Office Field.
Taking the field after only three days of training, the Vikings held a 15-11 advantage in shots over the Spartans, but a late comeback attempt fell short in the closely-contested loss. TWU held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Caylie Etherington cut into the two-goal deficit converting a penalty kick in the 81st minute.
The Vikings held an 8-5 advantage in shots over the Spartans in the first 45 minutes, with each team placing five shots on goal. WWU created several chances, but trailed 1-0 at the halftime break. TWU went ahead with a goal in the 33rd minute by Sophie Crowther.
WWU looked to equalize late in the half with three shots in the final three minutes, including a header shot by senior
Allison Lepp that was saved off a corner by
Etherington.
TWU, a Canadian powerhouse that has played in nine of the last 10 U Sports Championships, went up 2-0 with a goal midway through the second half when Charis Wardrope scored in the 73rd minute.

Claire Henninger made five saves in 65 minutes of action, with reserve
Abigail Trengove stopping a pair of shots in 25 minutes.
