BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 10 nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team played visiting Concordia University Irvine to a 1-1 tie Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at Harrington Field.
For the second consecutive game to start the 2022 season the Vikings got a quick goal when freshman
Claire Potter scored in the fourth minute (3:37) off a rebounded shot off the post by sophomore
Ashley Nguyen. In the season opener vs. UPS the Vikings took just 2:02 to put a goal on the scoreboard.
While WWU controlled possession in the first 45 minutes, Concordia held the advantage in the second half out-shooting the Vikings 8-3 and holding a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. In the season-opening 2-0 win over UPS the Vikings scored just two minutes into the game.
The Golden Eagles threatened early in the 75th minute when Mya Stice fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that WWU goalkeeper
Abigail Trengove punched over the bar for one of her career-high six saves. CUI found the equalizer less than two minutes later with a set-piece goal off a corner from Olivia Ocampo that was headed home by Layla Comeaux at the 76:05 mark.
During the 90-minute match CUI out-shot WWU 11-9 with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. WWU won six corner kicks compared to the three awarded to the Golden Eagles.
The undefeated Vikings (1-0-1) hit the road for the first time during the early portion of the 2022 season with a pair of upcoming matches against ranked opponents. WWU will play at No. 20 Sonoma State this Saturday (2 pm) in Rohnert Park, California and continue south to San Diego for a game against No. 22 Point Loma on Tuesday, September 6.
