BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Sunday's scheduled college soccer match between Western Washington University and Colorado School of Mines was canceled due to poor air quality caused by heavy wildfire smoke in the region.
WWU (1-1-2) and Mines (3-1-1) were scheduled for a 12:30 pm kickoff at Harrington Field on the south edge of the Western Washington University campus in Bellingham. After pushing the start back to allow for air quality to improve, the final measurements were above the recommended limit of 150 Air Quality Index (AQI).
As of now, the game will not be made up with Colorado School of Mines flying back to their campus in Golden, Colorado after the cancelation. The forecast showed improving air quality heading towards this evening, but travel plans for Colorado School of Mines did not allow for an evening start time.
The Vikings will resume their 2022 season schedule Thursday (Sept. 15) opening Great Northwest Athletic Conference play hosting Simon Fraser University in a 7 pm game at Harrington Field.
