BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 21 nationally-ranked Western Washington University women's basketball team recorded an 80-44 victory over Hawai'i Pacific University Saturday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym to close out a 2-0 weekend in the Lynda Goodrich Classic.
The Vikings, ranked No. 21 in the WBCA coaches poll and No. 17 in the media poll, improved to 5-1 on the season led by 16 points from All-American Brooke Walling, a season-high 13 points by Riley Dykstra and an all-round team defensive display that limited HPU to 44 points and a 20.7-percent shooting percentage. WWU is 4-0 in Carver Gym this season.
Western's balanced offensive attack included all 11 players scoring at least two points with the team combining for a 51.7 shooting percentage (31-for-61). The Vikings dished out 20 assists, recorded 12 steals and had nine blocked shots.
"We want to thank Hawai'i Pacific, MSU Moorhead and Central for making for a great two days of basketball at the Lynda Goodrich Classic," said WWU head coach Carmen Dolfo. "I was pleased with the way we played as a team over the last two days, sharing the ball, making the extra pass and creating a lot of great open looks. We played great team defense that opened things up for us on the offensive side."
Walling, Dykstra, sophomore guard Mason Oberg and senior guard Stephanie Peterson all earned a spot on the Lynda Goodrich Classic All-Tournament Team. Peterson finished with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting vs. HPU with six rebounds and five assists. Freshman guards KK Bass (9 points) and Demi Dykstra (7 points) each finished with single-game career-highs in points.
HPU (1-4) was led by 12 points from Megan Jones (6 Reb, 4 blocks) and nine points from Ilwaco High School product Erika Glenn.
