BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team is a force on the court, and in the classroom.
For the second consecutive year, the Vikings had eight players selected to the 2022-23 Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team presented by Barnes & Noble College by maintaining a cumulative GPA above 3.20.
While a top-10 team on the court with a 20-2 overall record, the Vikings are equally as impressive in the classroom matching the program record for All-Academic awards achieved last year.
WWU's eight selections for the 2022-23 season was highlighted by four-time award winner senior guard
Avery Dykstra and three-time selections senior guard
Monique Fierke and senior forward
Carley Zaragoza.
The Vikings eight honorees were tied for second-most among conference schools, trailing 10 by Montana State Billings and matching the eight by Seattle Pacific.
Avery Dykstra earned her fourth GNAC Academic honor carrying a 3.72 cumulative GPA as a business management major. On the court, the guard has started all 22 games this season, averaging 7.6 points, 2.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. Over the course of her five-year collegiate career she has appeared in 116 games (93 starts) while scoring 684 points and dishing out 273 assists.
Sophomore
Maddy Grandbois topped WWU's selections with a perfect 4.00 GPA as an interdisciplinary studies major and Zaragoza carries a 3.84 GPA while nearing a degree in environmental science.
To qualify for the GNAC All-Academic Teams nominees must be of sophomore eligibility or greater, have a minimum cumulative GPA or 3.20 or greater, be a letterwinner on their team and must be in their second year at the nominating institution. A total of 55 GNAC student-athletes earned all-academic honors with 14 recording a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher. The All-Academic Team also featured 36 repeat honorees including four four-time selections, 13 three-time honorees and 17 two-time award-winners.
