Vikings Bounce Back With Sweep Over MSUB

WWU improves to 5-2 in GNAC play, 6-7 overall with 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 victory

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 sweep over Montana State Billings Saturday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

The Vikings improved to 6-7 overall and remained in 3rd place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 5-2 record. WWU has won five of its last six matches. MSUB dropped to 6-10 overall and 0-7 in in GNAC play.

 

WWU recorded the sweep by set scores of 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 in front of 685 fans on Pink Night in Carver Gym.

 

"I am proud of the way we responded tonight and how we prepared for this match," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "It was a team effort with everybody contributing. It's always a special night to host Pink Night playing for a great cause."

 

Junior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich had another solid all-around match nearing a double-double with nine kills and nine digs, also contributing a service ace for a team-high 10.0 points. Junior opposite Janelle Grant had seven kills on a .316 attack percentage and recorded three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Delaney Speer tallied eight kills, 11 digs and one ace. Sophomore setter Caroline Hansen led the team with 16 assists, followed closely by 15 from junior Adele Holland. Sophomore middle Emily Vossenkuhl continued her steady play with five kills (.364) and a team-high four blocks.

 

MSUB was led by seven kills each by Julia Gordon and Aliah Williams, and a match-high 13 digs by libero Christine Funk.

 

UP NEXT

The Vikings (6-7, 5-2 GNAC) are back on the road next week in GNAC play traveling to play at Northwest Nazarene on Thursday in Nampa, Idaho (3:30 pm MT) and at Central Washington in Ellensburg on Saturday (7 pm).

ABOUT WWU VOLLEYBALL

The WWU Volleyball program is in its 54th season as a varsity intercollegiate sport in 2024, rising to an elite level by advancing to the NCAA Division II Championships in 10 of the last 11 seasons and 16 of the last 22 dating back to the 2001 season. The program has recorded 1,030 all-time wins (1030-599-7). The winner of 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference, the Vikings have four of the last seven GNAC titles with a 19-1 record in 2017, perfect 20-0 mark in 2018, an 18-2 league record in 2019 and clinched the four-peat with a 17-1 record in 2021. Led by 25th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams (524-144) the Vikings have posted a 275-74 record over the last 13 seasons and played in the NCAA II West Region championship match five out of the last eight seasons, winning titles in 2015, 2018 and 2021 (also 2007). WWU played for the NCAA II national championship in 2007 and 2018, both national runner-up finishes, and have advanced to the NCAA Final Four in three of the past eight seasons (2015, 2018, 2021).
