Vikings Record 25-Point Home Victory over Cal State East Bay

Olivia Wikstrom records 21-point, 11-rebound double-double on 6-for-12 shooting

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team made its home debut with a 84-59 victory over Cal State East Bay Tuesday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

The Vikings recorded their first win of the 2024-25 season defeating the Pioneers by 25 points while leading wire-to-wire in the non-conference West Region match-up. WWU improved to 1-2 on the season while East Bay dropped to 0-3.

 

WWU featured five players scoring in double-digits led by a 21-point, 11-rebound double-double by senior guard Olivia Wikstrom, who was 6-for-12 shooting and 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

 

Sophomore guard Demi Dykstra neared a double-double with 14 points and nine assists and junior guard Mason Oberg contributed 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Maddy Grandbois was nearly perfect from the field shooting 5-for-6 with a pair of three-pointers and also had a team-high four steals.

 

The Vikings combined to shoot 42.9-percent from the field (27-for-63) and were 7-for-18 (.389) from beyond the arc. WWU was an efficient 23-for-28 (.821) from the charity stripe and out-rebounded the Pioneers 39-27.

 

WWU's stifling defense resulted in nine steals and six blocked shots, causing 24 turnovers resulting in 37 points.

 

Cal State East Bay was led by 17 points from Shoreline CC product Taylor Eldridge (6-for-10 FG) and 10 points each by Lailah Carey (4-for-6 FG) and Aunika Hornung (5-for-7 FG, 8 Reb).

SERIES HISTORY VS. CAL STATE EAST BAY

WWU remained unbeaten vs. Cal State East Bay in the all-time series, improving to 9-0 all-time vs. the Pioneers. Tuesday's game was a rematch of the 2022 West Regional final won by the Vikings 73-59 on March 14, 2022 en route to WWU playing in the national championship game. First trip to Bellingham by the Pioneers since the 2010-11 season.

ABOUT WWU BASKETBALL

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in 11 of the last 14 full seasons, and 38 times in the 53-year history of the program. WWU has 24 seasons of 20 or more wins under head coach Carmen Dolfo, who is the winningest coach of any sport at WWU and ranks among Division II active and all-time coaching leaders in wins with 692, winning percentage and 20-win seasons. The Vikings have reached the NCAA II Tournament in 20 of 25 possible seasons at the Division II level with three trips to the Elite Eight (last in 2022) and played in the 2022 national championship game. The program has 1,124 all-time wins in the 53-year history of the program, and according to available records, is one of less than 20 women's college basketball team across all divisions and levels to reach the 1,000-victory milestone.
