CARSON, Calif. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season Friday with a 76-50 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first game of the CCAA/GNAC Crossover in the Torodome.
WWU received all but four of its 50 points from the starting lineup, with junior forward Alyson Deaver, junior guard Mason Oberg and senior guard Olivia Wikstrom each scoring 12 points. Wikstrom and sophomore forward Jadyn Watts tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
The Vikings were hurt by 17 turnovers, leading to 25 points for the Toros. CSUDH combined to shoot 47.6-percent from the field (30-for-63) and was led by a game-high 27 points by Asia Jordan (11-for-18 FG).
Western got off to a quick start scoring the first eight points of the game, but an 18-6 run by the Toros to finish the first quarter gave CSUDH an 18-14 lead. The Toros would lead the remainder of the way in the game, pulling away with a 22-11 advantage in the third quarter.
The Vikings (0-1) are back in action Saturday afternoon closing out the opening week of the 2024-25 season taking on Cal State LA in the CCAA/GNAC West Region Crossover in Carson, California. One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in 11 of the last 14 full seasons, and 38 times in the 53-year history of the program. WWU has 24 seasons of 20 or more wins under head coach Carmen Dolfo, who is the winningest coach of any sport at WWU and ranks among Division II active and all-time coaching leaders in wins with 691, winning percentage and 20-win seasons. The Vikings have reached the NCAA II Tournament in 20 of 25 possible seasons at the Division II level with three trips to the Elite Eight (last in 2022) and played in the 2022 national championship game. The program has 1,123 all-time wins in the 53-year history of the program, and according to available records, is one of less than 20 women's college basketball team across all divisions and levels to reach the 1,000-victory milestone.
