Vikings Starting Five Paves Way in Win Over SPU

Viking starters all score in double-digits and account for all 83 points in GNAC victory

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Led by five starters scoring in double-digits the Western Washington University women's basketball team recorded an 83-68 victory over Seattle Pacific University Saturday night on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

WWU's starting five accounted for all 83 points in the 15-point victory over the Falcons to improve to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. SPU dropped to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

 

Senior guard Olivia Wikstrom led all players with a career-high 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Wikstrom went 3-for-5 from three-point range and contributed two assists and a pair of steals.

 

Sophomore guard Demi Dykstra also recorded a career-best scoring night with 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting (3-for-5 3FG) and senior guard Maddy Grandbois had 16 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Alyson Deaver (14 points, 5 steals) and junior guard Mason Oberg (10 points) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Vikings.

 

WWU combined to shoot 47.4-percent for the game (27-for-57), tied its season-high with 10 three-pointers and was nearly perfect from the free throw line going 19-for-20. The Vikings also had a 32-24 advantage in rebounding.

 

The Vikings never trailed in the game leading for 38:35 of the 40-minute game. 

 

SPU was led by 13 points from Lolo Weatherspoon (5-for-10 FG) and 12 points from Schuyler Berry. 

 

UP NEXT FOR THE VIKS

The Vikings (5-4, 1-1 GNAC) are off next week for final exams to close out the fall quarter and return to action with a pair of games December 20-21 at the Big Island Holiday Classic in Hilo, Hawai'i. The Vikings next home games are scheduled for January 9 vs. Northwest Nazarene and January 11 vs. Central Washington.. SERIES HISTORY VS. SEATTLE PACIFIC

The Vikings extended their winning streak over the Falcons to 13 in a row dating back to the 2018-19 season and lead the all-time series 74-33. Two teams meet again on February 27 in Seattle.

GNAC Basketball Championships – March 6-8 in Lacey, WA (Marcus Pavilion)

 

ABOUT WWU BASKETBALL

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in 11 of the last 14 full seasons, and 38 times in the 53-year history of the program. WWU has 24 seasons of 20 or more wins under head coach Carmen Dolfo, who is the winningest coach of any sport at WWU and ranks among Division II active and all-time coaching leaders in wins with 696 (4 from 700), winning percentage and 20-win seasons. The Vikings have reached the NCAA II Tournament in 20 of 25 possible seasons at the Division II level with three trips to the Elite Eight (last in 2022) and played in the 2022 national championship game. The program has 1,128 all-time wins in the 53-year history of the program, and according to available records, is one of less than 20 women's college basketball team across all divisions and levels to reach the 1,000-victory milestone.
