Vikings Shut Out at APU 1-0

WWU allows early second-half goal to snap undefeated start to season

AZUSA, Calif. – The Azusa Pacific University women's soccer team scored just 13 seconds into the second half to break up a scoreless game en route to a 1-0 victory over Western Washington University Tuesday evening in a non-conference match-up at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

WWU had its three-game undefeated streak to start the season snapped falling to 1-1-2 on the young season. APU remained undefeated by improving to 4-0-1 in non-conference play.

The Vikings early-season scoring woes continued with the offense netting a goal in just one of the first four games of the season. WWU recorded just an opponent own goal during its two-game California road trip after opening with a 1-1 tie at Sonoma State on Saturday.

APU went up 1-0 moments following kickoff in the second half when Zoey Kuhn found the back of the net 13 seconds into the second stanza. Avery Guiel received a pass down the sideline off the kickoff and crossed the ball into the box that was deflected by WWU goalkeeper Abigail Trengove, with Kuhn collecting the loose ball and scoring the goal.

The Vikings first scoring opportunity was created in the 25th minute when senior midfielder Lydia Myers took a one-touch pass from junior forward Morgan Manalili near the midfield line. Myers found freshman forward Emily Holdridge creating a one-on-one situation with APU goalkeeper Maddie Williams, with the shot saved to keep the game scoreless.

Senior forward Ashley Nguyen took a chance outside the 18-yard box with a high shot that was saved in the 59th minute. A last-ditch effort to salvage a tie came at the 89:39 mark with the clock winding down as Manalili's shot was saved by Williams.

WWU had trouble timing its runs throughout the game being called offside eight times in the 90-minute match. The Vikings held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks but could not convert any of the set-piece opportunities.

APU held a 9-6 advantage in total shots with all six of the Vikings shots credited on goal with Williams recording six saves. Trengove was credited with five saves during the match.
