Vikings Play to Scoreless Draw vs. Regis

WWU ends non-conference play 2-2-2 heading into GNAC slate

SALT LAKE CITY – The Western Washington University men's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a shutout performance against Regis University, but the Vikings settled for a 0-0 draw Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.

The Vikings held a 6-1 advantage in shots, but both defenses played tough throughout limiting each opponent to one shot on goal. WWU completed the non-conference portion of the schedule at 2-2-2 while Regis is 0-1-5 on the season.

WWU's first scoring chance came in the 23rd minute when junior winger Albin Jonsson took a through ball from senior midfielder Adan Fernandez into the right side of the box. Jonsson cut back around his defender and fired a left-footed shot towards the lower corner that deflected off the post.

Just moments later Viking sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Dyer kept the game scoreless with a diving save off a tough Regis shot.

Early in the second half the Vikings were awarded a free kick just outside the box where senior Kaydin Wall blasted a low liner through the wall but his shot was saved by Ranger goalkeeper Greg Squire.

In the 55th minute senior forward Diego Alvarado fired a shot that squared up the left post and a rebound shot by senior defender Jacob Sundberg was blocked.

WWU's defense allowed only the one shot in the first half. Senior midfielder Lucas Hakamada played the full 90 with a host of defenders making key contributions to the shutout.

Through the first six games of the season WWU has allowed just four goals and no more than one goal in a game (2 shutouts). The Vikings were forced to play the final 17 minutes after Sebastiano Silvetti was shown his second caution for the red card.
