BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 21 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team remained on top of the GNAC standings and undefeated in league play with a 3-1 victory over Saint Martin's University on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Harrington Field.
The Vikings improved to 7-1-3 overall while extending their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive games (7-0-1). WWU is tied for the top spot in the GNAC standings with Simon Fraser through the first three weeks of the conference season at 5-0-1 for 16 points. Dating back to the end of the 2023 season Western is undefeated in its last 21 conference matches going 17-0-4.
"We leaned on our restarts today to score three goals. We spend a lot of time working on that part of the game and today it paid off," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "It was a great crowd on a rainy Pacific Northwest day that we drew energy from."
WWU opened the scoring in the 27th minute when junior midfielder Reece Walker found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Junior Morgan Manalili sent a pass to the back post where Walker got off an initial shot that was saved, but followed with a shot form close quarters to put WWU up 1-0.
Freshman and Sehome High School product Alina Kravtsov doubled the lead early in the 38th minute with her free kick from 25 yards out eluding the Saint Martin's defense for her first collegiate goal.
SMU quickly answered just over a minute after the Vikings goal to cut its deficit in half with Eve Charles scoring form five yards out after making a 30-yard run towards the box. The goal was the first allowed by the Vikings in GNAC play, ending a string of 523 consecutive scoreless minutes.
The game remained tight through much of the second half prior to the Vikings going up 3-1 on an 85th minute goal by junior midfielder Mie Cairns. Kravtsov found Manalili with an entry pass, who crossed it into the box for a right-footed volley by Cairns for her third goal of the season.
Senior captain Asia Hardin played the full 90 and set the WWU women's soccer record with 7080 minutes played. Hardin has started 79 of 80 possible games, playing all but 30 minutes of games she has appeared. She broke the old mark for a field player of 7011 minutes originally set by All-American Emily Webster from 2014-17.
"It's a huge accomplishment for Asia. She impacts our program in so many ways off the field, but her 7000+ minutes on the field have been pretty special as well," added Connell.
WWU held a 15-6 edge in total shots, 6-3 in shots on goal and 8-1 in corner kicks.
The team surrounds Asia Hardin following Saturday's victory to celebrate setting the WWU record for minutes played
The Vikings (7-1-3, 5-0-1 GNAC) are back in action next week with a home game against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday with kickoff at 7 pm at Harrington Field and travels to play at Simon Fraser Saturday with kickoff at 6 pm at Terry Fox Field.
