BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a 4-0 shutout victory over Saint Martin's Thursday night at Harrington Field.
Playing in front of a spirited crowd of 567 fans on WFC Rangers Night, the Vikings scored a pair of goals in each half to extend their winning streak to three consecutive games. WWU is 3-1-1 at Harrington Field this season.
Freshman winger Jose Perez recorded a first-half brace scoring in the fourth and 31st minutes to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead at the half. Just over three minutes into the contest Perez pressed the Saint Martin's defense, intercepting a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and slotting his shot to the lower left. He added a second in the 31st minute corralling a long cross into a dangerous spot by sophomore Reiley Buri-Brown finishing against to the lower left corner. The assist was the conference-leading fourth of the season for Buri-Brown.
Western added on in the second half with senior winger Albin Jonsson scoring in the 75th minute off a free kick from Perez, that freshman striker Zack Robertson headed towards goal that was finished by Jonsson for his third goal of the season and 18th of his career (tied for 11th in program history).
Senior Joar Tidblom completed the scoring in the 81st minute converting a penalty kick for his fourth goal in the last two games. Tidblom is the reigning GNAC Offensive Player of the Week after recording a hat trick in a 3-0 win over DBU last Friday.
The Vikings (3-4-2, 1-0-0 GNAC) remain at home hosting defending GNAC champion Western Oregon (4-3-2, 0-1-0 GNAC) on Saturday with kickoff for Latine Heritage Night scheduled for 7 pm at Harrington Field. The complete 2025 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/25_MSOC.
