BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Vikings keep winning and keep adding key points to remain on top of the GNAC table.
WWU improved to 6-1-1 in home games at Harrington Field this season following Thursday's 3-2 victory over Northwest Nazarene. The Vikings, ranked No. 10 in the West Region, extended their unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) to improve to 7-4-3 overall. Western is on top of the GNAC standings with 16 points at 5-0-1.
The Vikings got off to a quick start with senior Joar Tidblom converting a penalty kick in the 9th minute to WWU up 1-0. Senior winger Albin Jonsson won the PK streaking into the 18-yard box when he was taken down from behind. The goal was Tidblom's eight of the season to tie for the conference lead.
Leading 1-0 at the half, the Vikings played add-on with a goal in the 54th minute that opened a fleury of activity with three goals over a three minute stretch.
Jonsson put the Vikings up 2-0 at the 53:41 mark connecting on a header goal off a perfectly delivered corner kick from freshman midfielder Irving Baca-Silva.
NNU wasted little time bringing the game back to a one-goal margin getting on the scoreboard exactly one minute later when Derek Remen tucked his shot from the top of the box just inside the far post.
WWU stretched its lead to 3-1 late in the 57th minute with freshman defender Sam Hough scoring his first collegiate goal on a header off another corner from Baca-Silva.
The Nighthawks (5-4-4, 2-2-2 GNAC) continued to pressure the Vikings and pulled back to within one goal in the 72nd minute when Caleb Putney scored with a left-footed shot into the lower right corner. NNU was initially awarded the equalizing goal in the 80th minute, but offside was called to negate the goal.
"Another good performance for the team at Harrington Field," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "We kept NNU in the match a little longer than we should have, but a good lesson to learn from. We had three great scoring chances that created three good goals tonight. We are looking forward to our next match at Harrington Field on Saturday for Senior Night vs. SPU."
NNU held a 17-11 advantage in total shots and a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
WWU junior goalkeeper Charlie Dyer made four saves, including a few diving stops in the opening half.
