No. 19 Vikings top Falcons in Four Sets For Road Win

Vikings improve to 14-3 overall and remain in 1st place tie in GNAC standings

SEATTLE, Wash. – Any road win in the GNAC is a good win…and the No. 19 Western Washington Vikings earned a solid 3-1 victory over Seattle Pacific Thursday evening inside Brougham Pavilion.

After dropping the opening set 25-22, the Vikings stormed back taking the next three frames 25-21, 25-15, 25-16 open the second half of the conference schedule with a 3-1 victory. WWU earned the season sweep of SPU – also winning in four sets in Bellingham on September 27 – to improve to 14-3 overall.

The Vikings are 8-2 in GNAC play heading into Saturday's match at Montana State Billings in a three-way tie for the top spot in the standings. WWU, Simon Fraser and Alaska Fairbanks are all 8-2 in league play, with Central Washington (7-2) and Alaska Anchorage (7-3) forming a tight top five in the standings.

"I really liked that our team got better with every set and stayed together as we worked through some kinks," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Voss came up bit at the net both offensively and defensively and the D's (Delaney and Devyn) were outstanding on both sides of the ball. A great team road win to open the second half of conference play."

After SPU took the opening set 25-22, the Vikings trailed 12-4 to start the second set. WWU used an 8-2 run to get back into the set and finished on an 11-4 run to win 25-21 to even the match one set apiece.

Western pulled away midway through the third set going on an 8-2 scoring spurt to set up the 25-15 victory and controlled the fourth set 25-16 to earn the victory in four sets.

Senior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich led all players with 25.5 points contributing a 23-kill, 15-dig double-double on a .309 hitting percentage. Junior outside hitter Delane Speer set a career high with 28 digs to go along with 20 kills (.294) and pair of service aces. Junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl added 10 kills on a .409 hitting percentage and recorded a match-high five blocks.

Senior setter Adele Holland led the Vikings to a .299 hitting percentage with a season-high 40 assists and contributed two service aces. Junior Caroline Hansen tallied nine assists and sophomore Maleah Andrews made her collegiate volleyball debut with three assists. Andrews is an All-American third baseman for the WWU Softball team.

Seattle Pacific dropped to 8-10 overall and 3-7 in GNAC play. Megan Omlid led the Falcons with a 14-kill, 13-dig double-double for 17.5 points.
