Vikings Celebrate Seniors With 3-0 Win Over CWU

Vikings complete unbeaten GNAC slate at 11-0-3 for second consecutive season

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day with a 3-0 victory over Central Washington University to closed out a second consecutive undefeated GNAC season.

WWU received a first-half brace from senior midfielder Morgan Manalili and third goal from freshman Triya Mitchell to close out the regular season with the Vikings ninth shutout of the season. Manalili extended her GNAC lead in goals scored with 16 (in 19 games), tied for 4th-most in a season in program history.

The No. 12 nationally ranked Vikings finished the regular-season schedule with a 13-1-5 record and finished the GNAC slate undefeated for the second consecutive season at 11-0-3. Already having clinched its 11th GNAC regular season title (and second in a row), WWU will be the No. 1 seed in the GNAC Championships with play opening Thursday against No. 4 seed Seattle Pacific at 2 pm at Terry Fox Field at SFU Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.

"I am so happy for our seniors today. Each of them has poured so much into our program during their time in Bellingham," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "It is an incredibly humble and hard working group that is constantly putting the team above themselves. They are incredible competitors that bring out the best in those of us around them. I can't wait to see what they accomplish in the future."

WWU celebrated its 10-player senior class with the victory to extend its unbeaten streak to 16 consecutive games, going 13-0-3 dating back to a 4-1 win over Cal State Monterey on September 18.

Saturday's victory was also the 100th for the program at Harrington Field, improving to 100-7-10 all-time since opening the on-campus facility in 2014 for a .897 winning percentage.

The Vikings opened the scoring in the fifth minute with Manalili scoring the first of her two goals at the 4:14 mark. Senior Claire Potter beat her defender along the endline and laid off a pass to Manalili for the finish to the lower left of the goal.

In the 26th minute Manalili struck again for her fifth game with 2-or-more goals this season, finishing her own saved shot with a goal from close quarters. Junior defender Olivia Connell started the scoring sequence with a well-placed free kick into the 18-yard box.

Western made it 3-0 – marking the ninth game with 3+ goals this season – in the 82nd minute when Mitchell intercepted a pass at the top of the box and slotted her shot into the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.

WWU held a 22-3 advantage in total shots and 12-2 in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Ellie McGowan made a pair of saves to record her seventh shutout.
