Big Second Half Lifts Vikings to 83-73 Victory

WWU defeats Colorado Mesa at The Great Western Shootout

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Led by a game-high 31 points on 12-for-13 shooting by Nehemiah Pollard, the Western Washington University men's basketball team picked up a big non-conference win over Colorado Mesa University 83-73 Friday evening at The Great Western Shootout.

WWU shot 50.9-percent for the game, going 27-for-53 from the field and 11-for-29 from three-point range. Trailing 34-33 at the half, the Vikings had a strong second half performance out-scoring the Mavericks 50-39 to record the 10-point victory for the third consecutive victory.

Pollard recorded his second 30-point game of the season, putting together one of the most efficient scoring and shooting performances in program history by going 12-for-13 from the field (4-for-5 3FG). He added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals to fill up the stat sheet.

Freshman guard Dennis Johnson III equaled his season/career high with 13 points – all in the second half – on 4-for-7 shooting with a trio of three-pointers. Junior Louis Grante-Halliday added 12 points while going 8-for-9 from the free throw line.

Colorado Mesa led by seven points 42-35 at the 16:51 mark in the second half, but the Vikings answered going on a 14-4 run to grab a 50-46 lead. With the game tied 64-64 at the 6:44 mark, the Vikings scored six points on one trip down the court. Sophomore forward Trevor White hit a three-pointer while drawing a foul, then grabbed his own rebound following the free throw miss, and Grante-Hallidayconverted an old-fashioned three-point play to take a 70-64 lead and never trailed the remainder of the game while expanding the lead to as many as 12 points.

Ty Allred led CMU with 23 points on 9-for-17 shooting and Clayton Jewell scored 14 points and grabbed seven points.
