Vikings Win Defensive Battle Against ENMU 44-40

WWU ends game on 13-1 run to improve to 10-2 on the season

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Western Washington University women's basketball team won its seventh consecutive games pulling out a 44-40 victory over Eastern New Mexico University in a defensive battle to open The Great Western Shootout on Friday.

WWU overcame a three-point second quarter and rallied from an eight-point deficit to start the fourth quarter out-scoring the Greyhounds 17-5 down the stretch to improve to 10-2 on the season. ENMU dropped to 6-4 overall.

The Vikings were limited to a season-low 30.4-percent shooting (14-for-46), also went 4-for-17 from three-point range (.235) and 12-for-22 from the free throw line (.545). WWU trailed 20-16 at the half after being out-scored 11-3 in the second quarter (led 13-9 after the first quarter).

Trailing by 10 points 35-25 with 1:29 remaining in the third quarter, back-to-back layups to end the third and begin the fourth quarter by senior forward Olivia Hodges jump-started the Vikings comeback. Junior guard Libby Stump connected on a three-pointer at the 7:05 mark sparking what finished as a 13-1 run to conclude the game. Western's defense limited the Greyhounds to 0-for-18 from the field in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Hodges and Stump both finished close to a double-double with nine points each, with Hodges adding to her impressive rebounding numbers grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds and Stump recording a career-high 10 rebounds. Hodges is averaging 13.2 rebounds per game this season while reaching double-digits in boards in 10 of 12 games.

Junior guard Rakiyah Jackson added eight points, senior forward Aspen Garrison contributed seven points and junior guard Joy Haltom had seven points.
