Another Wire-to-Wire Victory For The Vikings

WWU features all five starters scoring in double-digits in 82-61 victory in Carver Gym

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team recorded a 21-point victory over Western Oregon University, 82-61, Saturday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

WWU had all five starters score in double digits to record its third consecutive win improving to 13-7 overall and remaining in a tie for 3rd place in the GNAC at 8-3 in league play. 

 

Senior guard Maddy Grandbois recorded her first career double-double in her 105th game as a Viking, scoring 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. 

 

Sophomore guard Demi Dykstra completed a GNAC Player of the Week worthy performance leading all players with 17 points after scoring a career-high 25 points Thursday vs. Saint Martin's.

 

Senior guard Olivia Wikstrom (14 points, 4 assists, 4 blocks), junior guard Mason Oberg (13 points, 4 assists, 3 steals) and junior forward Alyson Deaver (10 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks) also scored in double-digits.

 

The complete team effort was rounded out by eight of nine players that saw action scoring points, with sophomore forward Jadyn Watts contributing nine points, five rebounds and four assists and sophomore forward Ellee Brockman scoring four points in nine minutes of action.

 

WWU led wire-to-wire and did not trail during the 2-0 week with wins over Saint Martin's (79-56) and Western Oregon (82-61). The Vikings recorded season highs vs. WOU in blocked shots (9) and assists (22), while shooting 48.4-percent from the field (30-for-62).

 

WOU (7-12, 3-8 GNAC) was led by 15 points from Bella Pedrojetti and 13 points by Salma Youngblood.

SERIES HISTORY VS. WESTERN OREGON

WWU swept the season series vs. Western Oregon also winning 63-30 in Monmouth on January 2. The Vikings extended their winning streak over the Wolves to eight straight and improved to 61-11 all-time vs. WOU. The Vikings have won 29 of the last 31 in the series dating back to the 2008-09 season.

ABOUT WWU BASKETBALL

One of the premier basketball programs in NCAA Division II, recording a 20-win season in 11 of the last 14 full seasons, and 38 times in the 53-year history of the program. WWU has 24 seasons of 20 or more wins under head coach Carmen Dolfo, who is the winningest coach of any sport at WWU and ranks among Division II active and all-time coaching leaders in wins with 704, winning percentage and 20-win seasons. The Vikings have reached the NCAA II Tournament in 20 of 25 possible seasons at the Division II level with three trips to the Elite Eight (last in 2022) and played in the 2022 national championship game. The program has 1,136 all-time wins in the 53-year history of the program, and according to available records, is one of less than 20 women's college basketball team across all divisions and levels to reach the 1,000-victory milestone.
