Vikings Extend Scoreless Streak With Pair of Shutouts

WWU defeats Hawaii Hilo 6-0 in both ends of doubleheader sweep

HONOLULU, Hawai'i  – The No. 10 nationally ranked Western Washington University softball team continued its winning ways in Hawai'i recording a doubleheader sweep over Hawai'i Hilo Saturday with matching 6-0 scorelines at Sand Island Park.

 

WWU's pitching staff dominated once again with 14.0 scoreless inning against the Vulcans, limiting UHH to seven hits during the doubleheader. The Vikings have recorded three consecutive shutouts and have a current string of 22.0 consecutive scoreless innings pitched heading into Sunday's doubleheader vs. Hawai'i Pacific.

 

Senior Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez had a big day at the plate going 3-for-8 with a triple, home run and five RBI between the two games. Sophomore Laila Carpenter was 3-for-6 with a walk, triple and run scored and sophomore Maleah Andrews went 3-for-7 with three runs scored and hit her team-leading second home run of the season.

 

Senior Joie Baker (CG shutout) and sophomore Alli Kimball were spotless in their starts, with sophomore Kaiana Kong providing a pair of scoreless relief innings in the nightcap.

 

WWU improved to 5-4 with the two wins extending its winning streak to four consecutive games.

 

GAME NOTES

Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez hit her first home run of the season in the 1st inning of the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader…marked 19th homer as a Viking pulling her into a tie for 4th-most in program history for a career after setting the single-season record with 18 longballs in 2024…WWU's pitching staff has strung together 22.0 consecutive scoreless innings with the three consecutive shutouts and the final inning in the opening game vs. Chaminade…Hailey Rath continued her amazing streak of starting her 122nd consecutive game, never missing a game in her WWU career…Maleah Andrews hit her 10th career home run joining a small list of 18 all-time Vikings to reach double-digits in home runs as a Viking…both games were considered neutral site contests since Hawai'i Hilo had to travel to play the games…during the four games so far in Hawai'i WWU has outscored Chaminade and Hawai'i Hilo 21-1 with the pitching staff recording a 0.25 ERA.

Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the 1st inning and a 2-run triple in the 7th inning to finish with four RBI as the Vikings opened the doubleheader with a 6-0 blanking of the Vulcans.

 

Senior Joie Baker was impressive again in her homecoming firing a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to improve to 3-2 on the season.

 

Second baseman Kanilehua Pitoy was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored playing in front of family and friends.

 

UHH committed a season-high six errors in the contest leading to three unearned runs.

The Vikings logged their third consecutive shutout victory sweeping the doubleheader vs. Hawai'i Hilo with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.

 

WWU started the scoring in the top of the 3rd inning when first baseman Olivia Matlock plated a pair of runs with two-out single to right field. The Vikings tagged on two more runs in the 4th inning to double the lead to 4-0. Center fielder Laila Carpenter tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder McKenna Crum. Third baseman Maleah Andrews hit her second homer of the season to cap the scoring in the inning.

 

Western added runs in the 5th on a Nyree Johnson double and 7th on a Emma Andrewjeski-Ramirez single.

 

Starting pitcher Alli Kimball dominated in the circle allowing two hits in 5.0 scoreless innings, with reliever Kiana Kong closing out the win with 2.0 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

 

Andrews finished 2-for-4 with her team-best fourth multi-hit game, Hailey Rath was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored.

ABOUT WWU SOFTBALL

The WWU softball program begins its 33rd season in 2025 while coming off a historic 52-12 season in 2024. The Vikings claimed their third GNAC title by winning the 2024 postseason tournament at Viking Field and advanced to the NCAA Division II Championships for the sixth time in program history. Playing on its home field in the NCAA postseason for the first time, WWU won its first West Regional title defeating Cal State San Marcos in the sub-regional and Cal State Dominguez Hills in the Super Regional. The historic season ended playing in the national championship series as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival in Longwood, Florida. WWU has posted a winning record 21 times during the 32-year history of the program, which won the 1998 NAIA National Championship in only its sixth season to record the school's first ever team national title.
