HONOLULU – The Western Washington University volleyball team completed a 2-0 day to open the Aloha State Showdown, sweeping tournament co-host No. 24 Chaminade Thursday evening inside McCabe Gymnasium.
WWU improved to 4-1 on the season and 3-1 vs. nationally ranked teams defeating the Silverswords 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 to record its fourth consecutive victory. Chaminade dropped to 2-6 on the season after winning the PacWest a season ago with a perfect 20-0 conference record.
Senior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich continued her stellar early-season play recording her fourth double-double with 12 kills and 25 digs. Junior outside hitter Delaney Speer notched her second double-double of the day with 10 kills and 11 digs. Junior libero Finnley Claeys tallied 12 digs and a pair of aces, and redshirt freshman Chayse Flick-Williams also had two of the Vikings eight aces.
After taking the first two sets by identical scores of 25-19, the Vikings trailed 15-12 midway through the third set forcing a timeout. WWU responded on a 5-0 run and never trailed the remainder of the set, fending of Chaminade down the stretch for the 25-22 win.
After dropping the first match of the season in four sets to No. 11 Cal Poly Pomona, the Vikings have rattled off wins against No. 3 St. Cloud State (3-1), No. 4 San Francisco State (3-1), UC Merced (3-1) and No. 24 Chaminade (3-0).
"This was a great day for us and played a full team effort match tonight against Chaminade," said head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "There was a play made by every person late in sets to help us come out on top. Finnley (Claeys) had another outstanding day of volleyball by controlling chaos and turning it into the start of our offense. This was a great way to start a tough tournament."
