HONOLULU – The Western Washington University volleyball team extended its winning streak to five consecutive matches defeating the University of Hawai'i Hilo in four sets Friday evening during the second day of the Aloha State Showdown.
Playing in The Shark Tank in a match hosted by Hawai'i Pacific, WWU defeated UHH 25-16, 15-25, 25-21, 27-25 to improve to 5-1 on the season. UHH defeated GNAC teams Central Washington (3-0) and Alaska Fairbanks (3-2) earlier this season.
WWU was led by a 17-kill, 12-dig double-double by junior outside hitter Delaney Speer and four service aces from redshirt freshman Chayse Flick-Williams. Senior opposite Abby May added 11 kills on a .346 attack percentage and senior Devyn Oestreich just missed a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs.
"What an outstanding match by both teams…it was a real battle point-for-point," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Delaney (Speer) was a rock at the net and Abby (May) came alive at the end. Our setters – Caroline and Adele – were the hubs of our offense and made the right choices at critical times. Chayse (Flick-Williams) had a great service game with a huge run in the first set and key aces at the end of sets."
Leading the match 2-1, Hilo looked poised to take the Vikings to a deciding fifth set leading 23-19. WWU went on a 5-1 run to tie the set 24-24 and clinched the victory staving off set point winning three consecutive points to take the match.
Junior libero Finnley Claeys led the Vikings with 14 digs extending her string of consecutive double-digit dig matches to all six this season. Redshirt freshman Violet Burchak added eight kills on a .235 attack percentage and junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl had seven kills (.333) and one block.
UHH (6-4) was led by 13 kills by Alohi Garcia and 11 kills from Isabella Hadaller.
