Last Second Goal Lifts Vikings to 1-1 Tie

Frank Miedema scores team-leading third goal with 13 seconds remaining in game

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Senior forward Frank Miedema scored on a header goal off a free kick with 13 seconds remaining in the game to send the Western Washington University men's soccer team to a 1-1 tie in its home opener Thursday against Regis University at Harrington Field.

The late-game dramatics were ignited by Thomas Devonport of Regis drawing his second yellow card resulting in a red car at the 89:45 mark in the match. WWU sophomore midfielder Reiley Buri-Brown curled his left-footed free kick from just outside the 18-yard-box into the box where Miedema headed it home from close quarters to the back post.

WWU trailed 1-0 leading up to the last minute with the Rangers scoring their goal in the 63rd minute by Ben Wittenbernds. The game was tied 0-0 at the half.

The Vikings recorded their second draw of the season after coming off a tough four-game West Coast road trip and are 0-3-2 heading into Saturday's match vs. Westminster.

WWU and Regis matched each other with 10 shots each and the Vikings held a slim 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Western junior goalkeeper Charlie Dyer logged three saves in net.

"It was a good game for us tonight against a tough Regis team that created a lot of problems for us to solve," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "Our team did a great job figuring out those answers throughout the game. I thought we showed great resiliency throughout the game and felt we were always in the game. Frank (Miedema) came up big for us at the end of the game with great service from Reiley (Buri-Brown) and a great header finish to tie it up. We are looking forward to the guys competing again Saturday."
