Vikings Fall to Westminster 1-0 in Home Contest

WWU battles Westminster but falls short of result in non-conference game

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team played hard on Saturday's home game but fell just short of tying the score of 1-0 in a non-conference game against Westminster University at Harrington Field.

The score stood 0-0 through the first half, but just over second minutes into the second half, Westminster's Alejandro Puente managed to score with a loose ball after a melee in the box, putting the Griffins up 1-0.

The Vikings continued to fight through the second half, recording a trio of shots on goal. Freshman Jack Haegele took a shot soon after Westminster scored, but the ball was saved by Westminster goalkeeper Oliver Olsen, along with an attempt made by senior Albin Jonsson with 21 minutes left on the clock.

WWU had a good shot at an equalizer with less than 30 seconds left in the game when senior defender Krubelle Tesfaye had an attempt on goal, just grazing the right post.

Westminster held a 12-9 advantage in shots and 5-3 in shots on goal.

The non-conference loss drops the Vikings to 0-4-2 overall heading into a pair of home games next week hosting St. Edward's and Dallas Baptist at Harrington Field.
