Three Second Half Goals Lift Vikings to First Victory

Vikings receive goals from Filip Karlsson, Albin Jonsson and Jose Perez

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team scored three brilliant second-half goals to defeat St. Edward's University 3-1 Wednesday night at Harrington Field.

The Vikings celebrated the first day of classes in the fall quarter with their first victory of the season, defeating St. Edward's (from Austin, Texas) who was listed just outside of the national top 25 for NCAA Division II.

With the game scoreless through the first half, the Vikings erupted with three goals over a 12-minute span to build a 3-0 lead against the Hilltoppers (2-2-2).

Freshman winger Filip Karlsson put the Vikings up 1-0 in the 60th minute. Sophomore midfielder Reiley Buri-Brown sent a ball across the box that was corralled by freshman Landon Schulzeand fired back into the box. Senior winger Albin Jonsson got a touch on the ball and Karlsson finished to the left post for his first collegiate goal.

Less than four minutes after Karlsson's goal, Swedish teammate Jonsson kept the ball in at the end line, made a move on his defender, and slotted his left-footed shot past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season and 16th of his career to inch toward the top 10 in program history.

Freshman Jose Perez finished the scoring for WWU in the 72nd minute one-timing a layoff pass from senior Sebastiano Silvetti into the top left corner of the goal for his first career goal.

St. Edward's got a goal back in the 82nd minute and pressured the Vikings backline the remainder of the game, but defenders Krubelle Tesfaye, Sam Hough and Jack Haegele came up with plays to help secure the victory.
