Tidblom Hat Trick Leads Vikings to Victory

WWU defeats DBU 3-0 to wrap up non-conference play with 2-game winning streak

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Senior Joar Tidblom recorded his first career hat trick leading the Western Washington University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Dallas Baptist Friday evening under the lights at Harrington Field.

The Tidblom hat trick secured a 2-0-0 week for the with the Vikings defeating St. Edward's Wednesday night. WWU carries a two-game winning streak at 2-4-2 overall into the start of GNAC play next week. The Vikings scored three goals in each of the two victories during the week, after scoring four goals in the first six games.

"Tonight was a great result. I was happy with how the team has battled back from our early non-conference schedule," said WWU head coach Greg Brisbon. "We are looking forward to starting GNAC play next week with two home games at Harrington Field. "

Featured in a new-look formation playing in the midfield rather than his normal defender position, Tidblom was active during his 79 minutes of action, but it was three set pieces that secured the first hat trick by a Viking since Gilbert De La Luz four years ago at Saint Martin's.

The senior opened the scoring early in the ninth minute connecting on a header off a left-footed free kick from sophomore Reiley Buri-Brown. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Tidblom recorded the brace curling his free kick just outside the 18-yard box around the wall and inside the near post.

DBU (3-3-1) pressured the Vikings throughout the second half, but junior goalkeeper Charlie Dyer (4 saves) and center backs senior Krubelle Tesfaye and freshman Sam Hough (both played full 90) kept the Patriots off the scoreboard.

Tidblom completed the hat trick at the 84-minute mark with his strong penalty kick hitting the back of the net in the lower corner. Freshman Landon Schulze earned the penalty winning a ball and making a strong move in the box before being fouled to set up the Tidblom PK.

WWU held a 13-10 advantage in total shots, but DBU edged Western 5-4 in shots on goal. The Vikings also held a decisive 9-2 lead in corner kicks.

UP NEXT

The Vikings (2-4-2) remain at home next week carrying a two-game winning streak into the opening week of GNAC play hosting Saint Martin's on Thursday (10/2) and Western Oregon (10/4) on Saturday, with both games featuring a 7 pm kickoff at Harrington Field.
