No. 22 Vikings Sweep MSUB To Extend Winning Streak

Vikings play in front of huge student section during first week of fall quarter

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 22 nationally ranked Western Washington University volleyball team welcome students back for the fall quarter with a 3-0 sweep over Montana State Billings in front of an energetic crowd of 1,146 fans inside Carver Gym.

The Vikings extended their winning streak to nine consecutive matches, improving to 9-1 overall and remaining perfect in GNAC play at 3-0. WWU defeated MSUB 25-7, 34-32, 25-12 on WECU Court to improve to 3-1 at home this season.

After the Vikings took the lopsided first set 25-7, the second set featured 19 tie scores and nine lead changes, before Western prevailed 34-32. Both teams had numerous set points before the Vikings ended on a 4-1 run after trailing 31-30. WWU put the match away with a 25-12 third set to earn the sweep.

Junior pin hitter Delaney Speer led the Vikings with an 18-kill, 11-dig double-double while hitting .531 for the match (18 kills, 1 error, 32 attacks). Senior outside hitter Devyn Oestreich tallied a 12-kill, 19-dig double-double while adding a team-high five service aces.

"Each match is going to show us different challenges, and I really like how we embraced this one as we leaned on each other to battle together," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "What can you say about Delaney? What an incredible match on her part. She just dials in on finding a way with every attempt she gets!"

Junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl led the Vikings with five blocks and senior setter Adele Holland tallied 24 assists. The Vikings hit .340 for the match marking the fourth time this season to hit .300-or-better in a match.

MSUB (1-6, 0-3 GNAC) was led by 12 kills and nine digs from Addison Holcomb.
