Winning Streak Reaches Double Digits With Victory Over SPU

WWU improves to 10-1 overall, 4-0 GNAC with 3-1 victory in Carver Gym

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 22 nationally-ranked Western Washington University volleyball team continued its winning ways stretching its winning streak to 10 consecutive matches with a four-set victory over Seattle Pacific Saturday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

After dropping the season-opening match to nationally-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, the Vikings are undefeated over the last 10 matches to improve to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in GNAC play. WWU defeated SPU 26-24, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18 in front of over 800 fans to close out the first week of the fall quarter.

The Vikings and the Falcons traded points in the first set, with SPU pulling ahead, scoring five consecutive points to set point (24-21). Western called its second time out, stalling the SPU scoring run, and regrouped to go on a 5-0 run of its own to win the set 26-24 to go up 1-0 in the match.

Western controlled the second set winning 25-15, but SPU fought back after an early deficit in the third set to win 25-22 to extend the match. The Vikings closed out the victory with a 25-18 fourth-set win to earn its 10th victory of the season.

WWU received several standout performances in the match, highlighted by double-double performances from senior Devyn Oestreich (19 kills, 14 digs, .306, 2 aces, 1 block) and junior Delaney Speer (17 kills, 14 digs). Junior middle Emily Vossenkuhl equaled her career high with nine blocks and junior setter Caroline Hansen totaled a 22-assist, 17-dig double-double while setting a career high in digs.

"We had a great defensive effort tonight which was needed to match SPU's defensive scrappiness," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Caroline (Hansen) had a great match digging the ball and Finnley (Claeys) was her sure and steady self. I really liked our resilience during the match, especially with the comeback to take the first set. Devyn (Oestreich) and Delaney (Speer) really came alive in tight situations which is a sign of the great leaders they are."

Senior setter Adele Holland added 22 assists and eight digs. Oestreich and redshirt freshman Chayse Flick-Williams each had a pair of service aces. Junior libero Finnley Claeys led the Vikings with 20 digs.

SPU (5-7, 0-4 GNAC) battled the Vikings with the match featuring 30 tie scores and 17 lead changes. Megan Omlid led the Falcons with an 11-kill, 13-dig double-double and Brooke Williams totaled six kills and seven blocks.
