Vikings Drop GNAC Road Game in Anchorage

WWU drops to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in GNAC play with 34-point loss in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Western Washington University men's basketball couldn't overcome a slow start to Saturday's 90-56 loss to the University of Alaska Anchorage in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

The Vikings went 0-2 during their annual trip to Alaska – where temperatures dropped to as low as negative 44 degrees – to fall to 7-8 on the season and 1-3 in GNAC play. UAA completed a 2-0 weekend to improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

The Vikings got off to a slow start scoring just four points through the first 12 minutes on 2-for-11 shooting and could not find their rhythm the remainder of the half trailing 46-19 at the break. UAA used an 11-0 run late in the half to build the 27-point halftime lead.

UAA continued its high-scoring output in the second half expanding its lead to as many as 40 points at 85-45 with just over three minutes remaining.

The Vikings 34-point loss was the most by the Vikings since a 32-point defeat (88-56) against Cal State San Bernardino on December 16, 2010 in a Great Western Shootout game in Las Vegas. It is the largest margin of defeat in a GNAC contest since a 27-point loss (91-64) against Montana State Billings on February 14, 2022.

Guards Nehemiah Pollard and Dennis Johnson III led the Vikings with 12 points each. Western played its second consecutive game without normal starter and Preseason All-GNAC forward Trevor White, who did not make the trip to Alaska due to an injury.

UAA (11-4, 3-1 GNAC) featured five players scoring in double digits led by 18 points by Bishop Tosi (6-for-9 FG, 5-for-6 FG) and 17 points by Skagit Valley College product Sylas Williams (7-for-11 FG, 12 Rebounds). Hasaan Herrington added a 16-point, 10-assist double-double. The Seawolves shot 56.4-percent from the field (31-for-55) for the game, including 17-for-24 (.708) in the second half.
