Vikings Remain Undefeated in GNAC Play With Win Over Saints

In battle of unbeaten GNAC teams, WWU improves to 4-0 in conference play with win over Saint Martin’s

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University women's basketball team remained undefeated in GNAC play improving to 4-0 with a 77-60 victory over Saint Martin's University Saturday on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

In a battle of unbeaten GNAC programs, the Vikings earned the 17-point victory with a strong shooting and defensive performance against the Saints. WWU improved to 12-3 overall and through the first two weeks of the conference slate is tied for 1st place with Central Washington.

WWU trailed 22-21 through the first quarter, including an early 12-6 deficit, but battled back with a strong second quarter out-scoring the Saints 17-6 to grab a 38-28 halftime lead. The Vikings extended their lead to as many as 19 points midway through the third quarter at 49-30 and held off any late rally chances by the Saints with an 18-point fourth quarter performance.

The Vikings had their second-best shooting performance of the season going 28-for-46 from the field (.609) and connected on 4-of-9 long distance shots from three point range. Western also held a decisive 38-22 advantage in rebounding.

Junior guard Libby Stump led the Vikings with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting and tied for the team high with eight rebounds. Stump was coming off a 13-point, 10-assist double-double in Thursday's win over Western Oregon, giving her a solid shot at GNAC player of the Week honors.

Senior forwards Aspen Garrison (14 points, 4 rebounds) and Olivia Hodges (11 points, 8 rebounds) were strong in the paint, and sophomore post Vivienne Berrett had her best performance as a Viking with 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting, six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.

The Saints (7-6, 3-1 GNAC) had four players reach double digits in scoring, led by 17 points from Kiana Rios and 11 by Laiken Hill. SMU was 22-for-25 (.880) from the free throw line.
