Vikings Down Wolves in Four Sets at Home

WWU improves to 3-0 in Carver Gym with pair of career milestones reached for Speer and Claeys

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team celebrated a pair of career statistical milestones in its 3-1 victory over Western Oregon University Thursday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

Seniors Delaney Speer and Finnley Claeys became the 20th and 21st players in program history to reach the 1,000 career mark, helping lift the Vikings to the four-set victory over the Wolves improving to 6-6 overall, 3-3 in GNAC play and stay perfect at 3-0 in Carver Gym.

Set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-12 in favor of the Vikings, who extended the program's winning streak over WOU to 28 consecutive matches.

"I am so proud of Finnley and Delaney for reaching the 1,000 dig mark for their career," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Only a few people in the gym understand the time and dedication they have made to be really good at what they do and they are two people who can easily say they take advantage of every opportunity to get better. So well deserved to celebrate this great milestone accomplishment."

Speer led the Vikings with 17.5 points recording her eighth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 15 digs, also adding three service aces and one block. In addition to reaching the 1,000-dig mark for her career, Speer continued to close in on 1,000 career kills now just 59 short of that milestone.

Senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl tallied 11 kills and eight blocks to record 15.5 points and freshman Jasmine Terry had nine kills and five blocks. Claeys finished with a team-high 16 digs giving her 1,015 in her four-year career. Sophomore Dani Turcinec contributed a career-best 12 digs to go with three aces.

The sophomore duo of freshman Maya Quitiquit (23 assists, 14 digs) and senior Caroline Hansen (13 assists, 5 digs) guided the Vikings balanced offense featuring five players with five-or-more kills.

"I appreciate how we worked to get better with each set and found ways to make some extra plays," added Flick-Williams. "Voss (Emily Vossenkuhl) was a big wall and that started a good run for us."

WOU (6-8, 2-4 GNAC) was led by a 20-kill, 17-dig, 3-block double-double by Mele Taumoepeau.
