No. 17 Vikings Blank Western Oregon 2-0

WWU records another shutout to remain undefeated in GNAC Play

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The No. 17 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team delivered a pair of second-half goals and another dominating defensive performance earning a 2-0 road shutout victory over Western Oregon University Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

The Vikings won their third consecutive game and extended their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive (5-0-3) contests improving to 6-1-3 overall and remains in first place in the GNAC at 4-0-1. WWU has posted five consecutive shutouts and not allowed a goal over the last 455 minutes.

WWU held a decisive 13-1 advantage in total shots in the contest with a 7-1 lead in shots on goal. The Vikings scored their second-half goals in the 53rd minute by freshman Chloe Van Wey and former Sehome High School teammates Triya Mitchell and Keira Reeves connected on an insurance goal in the 79th minute.

"We were incredibly consistent in all phases of our defensive effort, from the players putting pressure up top to the players behind making plays," said WWU head coach Travis Connell. "That effort and belief led to the platform for some second-half goals. We got better-and-better throughout the match to get three points on the road. I am proud of our competitive mindset and the way we approached the entire game."

The Vikings dominated possession in the opening half, generating seven shots (3 on frame) with the two teams playing a scoreless first 45 minutes. WWU forced three saves from Wolves goalkeeper Ayanah Soon, but the biggest scoring threat of the half came in the 28th minute when freshman Keira Reeves took a shot from outside the box that just missed to the left of the post.

WWU struck first in the 53rd minute with freshman defender Chloe Van Way scoring from distance to put the Vikings up 1-0. Sophomore central defender Ella Witherspoon found space crossing the midline feeding a pass to senior forward Emily Fojo just outside the 18-yard box. Fojo held back her defender and found Van Wey on the wing for a potential cross, but her right-footed, one-time connection trickled through the box past Viking forward Emily Holdridge and the WOU keeper into the lower right corner for her second goal of the season.

The  Vikings played add-on with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game to push the advantage to 2-0. Senior midfielder Mie Cairns intercepted a pass with anticipation and fed the ball to freshman midfielder Keira Reeves at the top of the 18-yard box. Reeves strongly corralled the ball with a jostle from a WOU defender and completed the Sehome connection with an out-side-the foot pass to sophomore forward Triya Mitchell in the center of the box, who finished with a strong right-footed shot tucked under the crossbar in the center of the goal for her second goal of the season.

Coming off a win and tie last week in GNAC play, Western Oregon opened its four-game homestand with the 2-0 loss falling to 2-4-3 overall and 1-2-2 in conference games.
