SEATTLE, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team got off to a strong start with a goal in the opening minutes but conceded a pair of second-half goals seven minutes apart to fall 2-1 to No. 13 nationally ranked Seattle Pacific University Saturday evening at Interbay Stadium.
The Vikings looked to build on the momentum from Thursday's 1-0 road win at Northwest Nazarene and held the lead for more than 70 minutes before suffering the one-goal loss to the Falcons. WWU dropped to 7-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in GNAC play.
Seattle Pacific improved to 12-2-1 overall with its fifth consecutive victory, remaining undefeated at 8-0-0 in home games at Interbay Stadium. The Falcons defeated the Vikings 4-1 on October 3 in Bellingham to start the winning streak.
The Vikings struck first in the opening four minutes of the game when sophomore winger Jose Perez pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired a curling right-footed shot from 10 yards out for his second goal in as many games.
SPU equalized in the 72nd minute on a header goal by Kasey Toevs off a free kick just outside the 18-yard box from Brady Reed.
WWU had a scoring opportunity in the 74th minute when Julian Herring took a shot from distance that knuckleballed towards the goal with the save from SPU goalkeeper Willem Ficek falling to Tommy Carroll who got off a shot that went high.
The Falcons scored the go-ahead goal just seven minutes after getting the equalizer when JP Guzman followed up a saved shot by Viking defender Jack Haegele with a strike from close range for his fifth goal of the season.
SPU held an 11-9 lead in total shots and the Vikings had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The fast and physical rivalry game featured 27 fouls (WWU 17, SPU 10) and six yellow cards.
The Vikings (7-6-2, 2-4-1 GNAC) return to Harrington Field closing out the regular season schedule with four consecutive home games, beginning next week with a Thursday evening game vs. Simon Fraser (6 pm) and Saturday vs. Jamestown (4 pm). All conference games will stream live on the GNAC Network. The complete 2026 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/MSOC.
