BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University men's soccer team dropped a tightly-contested 1-0 GNAC match against Simon Fraser University Thursday evening at Harrington Field.
The game was scoreless until the 80th minute when Simon Fraser scored the game's only goal. Defender Axl de Vries sent a long throw-in into the 18-yard box that bounced towards the goal prior to Pablo Perera connecting on a back-heel shot past WWU goalkeeper Charlie Dyer.
The Vikings had the first scoring opportunity midway through the first half when Filip Karlsson drew a foul in the box setting up a penalty kick for senior midfielder Edgar Serrano. Having converted on four penalty kicks this season, Serrano sent the SFU goalkeeper to his left, but his shot down the center of the goal was kick-saved by Harrison Gough to keep the game scoreless.
SFU held a 14-11 advantage in total shots, with 12 coming in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder Irving Baca-Silva and junior defender Alex Martinez played the full 90 minutes in the field for the Vikings.
The Vikings (7-7-2, 2-5-1 GNAC) remain at home on Saturday closing out the non-conference portion of the schedule hosting the University of Jamestown with kickoff scheduled for 4 pm at Harrington Field. All conference games will stream live on the GNAC Network. The complete 2026 schedule can be viewed online via wwuvikings.com/MSOC.
