Vikings Fall in Four Set Battle with Alaska Anchorage

Delaney Speer records 13th double-double with 18 kills and 17 digs

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought four-set match to the University of Alaska Anchorage Saturday evening on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

The Vikings had its two-match winning streak snapped, moving to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. UAA completed a 2-0 road trip after earning a reverse sweep five-set win Thursday at Simon Fraser, improving to 16-7 overall and 9-4 in conference play. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 25-23 in favor of the Seawolves.

WWU was led by the 13th double-double of the season from senior outside hitter Delaney Speer, totaling 18 kills, 17 digs, three blocks and one ace for a match-high 21.0 points. Sophomore outside hitter Aly Skagen equaled her season/career high with 15 kills. Senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl contributed seven kills on a .429 hitting percentage and led all players with seven kills. Freshman setter Maya Quitiquit tallied 23 assists, 14 digs and a pair of service aces.

Alaska Anchorage was led by a 16-kill, 11-dig double-double by Lee Ivakina, a 13-kill, 10-dig double-double by Kyana Gabriel and 35 assists from setter Hannah Trotter.

Looking to push the match to a deciding fifth set, the Vikings battled back from a 14-8 deficit to tie the set 16-16 and took a 17-16 lead on a Speer kill. Seven tie scores brought the set to 23-23 with UAA scoring the final two points on kills by Ivakina and Trinity Byrne to seal the four-set victory and the season sweep over the Vikings.
