BILLINGS, Mont. – Led by three players recording double digits in kills, the Western Washington University volleyball team recorded a four-set road victory over Montana State Billings Thursday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play in Alterowitz Gym.
The Vikings improved to 7-7 overall and 4-4 in conference play with the 25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 25-15 victory over the Yellowjackets (3-14, 0-8 GNAC).
Senior pin hitter Delaney Speer recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs, also contributing two service aces and a block for 21.5 points. Sophomore Aly Skagen tallied 12 kills on a .241 hitting percentage and freshman Jasmine Terry had 11 kills on a .348 hitting percentage.
"Our pins - Delaney & Aly - did a good job mixing up their attacks and Jasmine had a great night at the net," said WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams. "Finnley and Chayse held down the backcourt along with Maya and Delaney."
Western's defensive effort was bolstered by a match-high 27 digs from senior libero Finnley Claeys and 22 from sophomore defensive specialist Chayse Flick-Williams. Freshman setter Maya Quitiquit (25 assists, 13 digs, 3 aces) and senior Caroline Hansen (20 assists, 5 digs, 3 aces) were effective in distributing the ball to the Vikings pin hitters.
Sophomore middle Teya Zaddack provided a boost in a reserve role, making her season debut with four kills and three blocks.
"MSUB was pesky tonight and I thought we weathered the storm that they created," added Flick-Williams.
The match featured 16 ties and seven lead changes, with both teams going on extended scoring runs throughout the four-set match.
Allie Dorman led MSUB with a 17-kill, 11-dig double-double and Emma Fairbairn contributed nine kills and 21 digs.
