BELLINGHAM, Wash. – For the fourth time in the last five seasons and 21st time in program history the Western Washington University women's basketball team is dancing in the NCAA Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West Region.
The Vikings won the GNAC regular season title and advanced to the conference tournament final to head into the NCAA Tournament with a 24-7 overall record. WWU's postseason presence includes playing in the conference, regional or NCAA championships in 51 of 54 seasons in program history. The Vikings are 21-19 all-time in NCAA tournament play, recording at least one victory in 12 of 19 prior regional appearances.
WWU will open the regional tournament facing No. 7 seed Point Loma (21-8) on Friday, March 13 (time TBD) in Ellensburg, Washington. Central Washington University was awarded the No. 1 seed with a 23-6 overall record and will face GNAC Tournament champion Montana State Billings in the regional quarterfinal.
Western enters the NCAA Tournament having won 12 of their last 14 games, including a late-season nine-game winning streak that was snapped in a 66-61 loss to MSUB in the GNAC Tournament Final on Saturday evening in Carver Gym.
The Vikings feature three players that earned All-GNAC honors, including first-team selections senior forward Olivia Hodges and junior guard Libby Stump, and honorable mention pick junior guard Demi Dykstra. Hodges is the NCAA Division II leader averaging 13.2 rebounds per game and with 23 double-doubles. Stump and Hodges were also selected to the GNAC Championships All-Tournament Team. Carmen Dolfo was selected as the GNAC Coach of the Year for the sixth time.
