ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Western Washington University volleyball team recorded a reverse sweep victory over Chaminade University Friday afternoon during the second day of the CWU Invitational inside Nicholson Pavilion.

The Vikings trailed 2-0 in the match to the Silverswords dropping the first two sets 28-26 and 25-21. WWU stormed back taking the third set 25-20 and extended the match to five sets with a 26-24 win in the fourth set.

Western had a 14-11 lead in the deciding fifth set, but Chaminade went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-14 lead. WWU head coach Diane Flick-Williams changed the momentum calling a timeout, and the Vikings responded with three consecutive points to earn the 17-15 win sealing the first victory of the season with sophomore pin hitter Aly Skagen recording kills on the final two points.

"What a great team effort and fight today. Everyone had a moment to create momentum for us," said Flick-Williams, who earned her 550th career victory. "I'm so proud how the team responded after the second set to catch their groove and get better with every opportunity. Our block really came alive and Emily (Vossenkuhl) was incredible. For her to be a part of 15 of the 20 blocks is unheard of."

Vossenkuhl cemented her name in WWU and GNAC history, tallying 15 blocks to rank second in both program and conference history. The senior middle tallied 13 block assists, two solo blocks and contributed seven kills on a .313 hitting percentage.

The Vikings received numerous standout performances in the five-set match, with senior pin hitter Delaney Speer notching a 16-kill, 14-dig double-double and Skagen tallying a career-best 15 kills on a .361 hitting percentage in her second collegiate match.

Freshman Jasmine Terry was a dangerous offensive weapon with 13 kills on a .393 hitting percentage and equally impressive at the net with seven blocks. Sophomore pin hitter Maren Stuber recorded 10 kills and five blocks. The setter combo of freshman Maya Quitiquit (30 assists, 16 digs) and senior Caroline Hansen (23 assists, 8 digs) ran an efficient offense over the final three sets. Senior libero Finnley Claeys contributed 17 digs and a team-best three service aces and sophomore defensive specialist Chayse Flick-Williams set a career-high with 12 digs.

Chaminade (2-3) was led by a match-best 19 kills from Lillie Hinton and 33 digs by Kyra Pagud. The Silverswords have been an NCAA tournament qualifier four of the last five seasons.

The Vikings (1-1) close out the opening week of the 2026 season Saturday taking on San Francisco State at 4 pm in Nicholson Arena. WWU recorded a reverse sweep victory, dropping the first two sets to trail 2-0, and won the final three sets to earn the first victory of the season. It was the first reverse sweep victory since September 21, 2024 when the Vikings defeated Alaska Anchorage at home 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-9. 

Senior middle Emily Vossenkuhl recorded 15 total blocks (13 block assists, 2 solo blocks) to enter the WWU and GNAC single-match record book at No. 2. Vossenkuhl's performance trailed only the 16 blocks by Tanya Price at Central Washington in 1995 in WWU history and ranks behind the 18 blocks by Logan Remington of Simon Fraser set last season in GNAC history. She set the WWU single match record with 13 block assists.

The 20.0 total team blocks are the third-most in a match in program history, trailing only a pair of 21.0-block performances in 1998 at Saint Martin's and 2017 at Alaska Anchorage … Delaney Speer tallied her seventh consecutive double-double going back to last season with 16 kills and 14 digs … freshman Maya Quitiquit recorded a 30-assist, 16-dig double-double … freshman Jasmine Terry had 13 kills and 7 blocks in her second collegiate match (.393 hitting pct.) … sophomore Aly Skagen recorded 15 kills on a .361 hitting percentage, including the final two kills to seal the victory … WWU is 37-16 (.698) in 5-set matches over the last 12 seasons (since 2015).
