BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The No. 18 nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team unleashed 19 shots in their top 20 match-up against No. 10 University of Colorado Colorado Springs Sunday at Harrington Field but was unable to find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to the Mountain Lions.

The Vikings out-shot the Mountain Lions 19-5 with a decisive 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. A couple of close calls, one crossbar and two team saves prevented the Vikings from scoring in the tightly-contested match of perennial NCAA Tournament programs.

UCCS (2-0-0) cashed in on the first of its few scoring chances, scoring in the fourth minute on a free kick from Elise Broberg from 40-yards out that was headed home from just outside the six-yard box by forward Abby Stassi.

The Vikings didn't back away from the early deficit, constantly pressuring the UCCS defense, who was coming off a season-opening 6-2 victory over Point Loma. Sophomore forward Triya Mitchell had a breakaway chance early in the second half in the 49th minute with her one-on-one shot smothered by Mountain Lion goalkeeper Lucy Kapranos (6 saves).

Senior Reese Walker had a shot that hit the crossbar in the 50th minute and freshman Chloe Van Wey took a free kick in the 58th minute that also skimmed the crossbar. The Vikings final scoring chance in the 90-minute match came in the 84th minute when freshman Madeline Mays worked the ball on the baseline laying the ball off in the middle to senior Emily Fojo, with the shot sailing just high.

The loss for the Vikings (1-1-0) snapped a 20-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season, going 15-0-5 during the streak to tie for the third-longest stretch of games without a loss in program history. 

The Vikings (1-1-0) hit the road for the first time in 2026 next week with a pair of matches against CCAA opponents, beginning with Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside, California on Friday, September 4 with a 7 pm game at Cardinale Stadium. WWU also plays at Cal State East Bay on Monday, September 7 with a 2 pm game at the Oakland Roots practice facility in Alameda, California.
